In the absence of Jaleco's delayed World Championship Pool 2004, Pool Shark 2 is all that remains in the Christmas 2004 run-up for genre fanatics. But despite being aimed towards a traditionally niche audience, this is one game that's as much about the players as it is the sport they're playing.

Inhabited by a playable population of stereotypical pool veterans, skill and luck will not be the only deciding factors in this virtual pool game. A game with an attitude problem, players will find themselves being taunted, even goaded, into forfeiting their games. It's a game that not only tests a player's skill; it pushes their composure, patience and their ability to focus too.

But once you've mastered the ability to block out any in-game distractions, it's ultimately your responsibility to put the ball in the pocket. The play mechanic itself is rather simple, and sees the player taking charge of aim and power before sending the balls around the table. Judging angles and spin can be a little trickier, but it all becomes second nature within a few hours of play.

And where other games might raise the question pool's limited variety, Pool Shark 2 demonstrates not only a variety of locales, playing surfaces and game modes, it even plays host to more unconventional tables - some with more than four sides and six pockets.

Pool Shark 2 is remarkably diverse, and shows players how the virtual sport doesn't have to be just about hitting balls with sticks. As far as pool goes, it's all good. Pool Shark 2 In the absence of Jaleco's delayed World Championship Pool 2004, Pool Shark 2 is all that remains in ... Best Price £3.99

Always popular in video games, Marvel's Spider-Man has graced consoles for many years, but of course it wasn't until the dawn of PlayStation and Saturn et al that the spandex-clad super-hero was born in 3D. 2002's Spider-Man, a game based on the recent film of the same name, was perhaps the most successful instalment, and delivered classic web-slinging action and combat. But now there's Spider-Man 2 for PC, a game that differs from its console counterparts and targets a younger audience more appreciative of simple play mechanics and light-hearted visuals.

Spider-Man 2 again sees players assuming control of Peter Parker's alter-ego as he fights for the cause of good yet again, but where the console versions rely heavily on the Sam Raimi sequel for storytelling, the Fizz Factor-developed PC version boasts a whole new plot of its own. However, catching villains and defeating enemies is still the order of the day here, it's just a lot simpler.

Visually speaking, the game looks almost cartoon-esque. Textures are flat and simple, and on-screen animation is a little clunky, but some would argue that's the way it's supposed to be. On a similar note, Spider-Man's control method is among the easiest we've come across for an airborne platformer. Using those classic W, A, S and D keys, players can move forwards, backwards and strafe, while the mouse serves as a means for direction, jumping and combat. And that's it. Simple enough, and most definitely welcome to a pre-teen audience.

Spider-Man 2 for PC is a game for kids, and not to be compared with the console offerings. And though it lacks a big-screen plot and flashy graphics, none of that matters here - kids will love it. End of story. 'A best-selling novelist whose books have been the subject of many a Hollywood blockbuster, Tom Clancy now seems to like nothing as much as the array of storytelling options offered by video games. Ubisoft develop his Splinter Cell games in-house but the popular Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon games are developed by Red Entertainment. Clancy's baptism into the world of video games began in 1998 with the multi-platform release of Rainbow Six, an adaption of a bestselling Clancy novel of the same title.

You were recruited by John Clark, a much darker, more paranoid, and more right-wing character than Clancy's more famous Jack Ryan. Clark, for one thing, believes that the only way to combat terrorism is with the threat of sure and violent retribution. His codename is Rainbow Six. The realistic weapons and tactics of the first game were new to the FPS scene at the time, and the game featured intelligence maps by which you had to co-ordinate your team's assault.

The fourth instalment in this prolific series is as usual developed by Red Entertainment. An evil, freedom-hating terrorist network is planning to kill millions of innocents using an advanced nanotechnology virus. Rainbow, the zero-tolerance anti terrorist squad have been called in to put a stop to this nonsense. Players will experience close-quarter, split-second decision gameplay, playing either as Ding Chavez, the heroic team leader, or Dieter Weber, the reliable if arrogant team sniper. Lead the Rainbow team's highly skilled operatives, all tooled up with the most advanced equipment available.

The game features typical new FPS technology: a new graphical engine, ragdoll physics and heightened enemy AI. As you'd imagine for a tactical FPS, the game also supports full online play, and should delight fans of Tom Clancy games.'
