It is no exaggeration to describe the 2003 Bentley Speed 8 as a new car. Though the previous two generations of Speed 8 performed spectacularly well, returning Bentley to the Le Mans podium in 2003, it was felt that for the final year of the three year program, a fresh approach was required. Clearly the car still features enclosed bodywork meaning it remained in a class of its own and the engine retained its basic architecture, 4-litre capacity, direct fuel injection and twin turbochargers. In all other significant respects it has a new design from the ground up. The concept driving the design was to ensure much better exploitation of the airflow over the body and particularly to the rear wing. To achieve this, the external cockpit area was much reduced, though the car is actually more spacious inside, making a smaller hole in the air and allowing the car to use a much smaller, more aerodynamic engine cover. The 2003 Bentley Speed 8 won the 2003 24 Hours in Le Mans in dominating fashion, beating the previous champion Audi. Guy Smith drove the number 7 Bentley Speed 8 across the line, and David Brabham followed up in 2nd place in the sister number 8 car. This gave Bentley their first victory at Le Mans in 73 years, and their 6th victory overall. Bentley Speed 8 at 18th scale It is no exaggeration to describe the 2003 Bentley Speed 8 as a new car. The 1957 Maserati 250F Lightweight T2 at 1/8 Scale. Chassis number 2529. As raced in the German Grand Prix at Nurburgring by Juan Manuel Fangio. A mesmerising, hand built 1/8 Scale model in a strictly limited edition of just 50 cars. Using as physical reference Chassis 2528, now in the most original condition of the three lightweights built, along with many contemporary photographs of Chassis 2529 taken at Nurburgring, Amalgam have meticulously created full working drawings so as to come as close as humanly possible to recreating the car exactly as it raced on that magical day in August 1957. Given such privileged access, Amalgam's craftsmen were able to study and reproduce every detail, and nuance of the finished racing machine so that, for example, not only is each and every rivet shown, but differences in their relative size and type are also faithfully reproduced. All in all, a truly authentic reproduction of the famous Maserati that captures the spirit and excitement of that unforgettable race when Fangio drove it to victory in the German Grand Prix. That Grand Prix, at the Nurburgring, was probably Fangio's greatest race, he lost a full 56 seconds and the lead in a pit stop, but still went on to win after a most spectacular pursuit of Mike Hawthorn, having overtaken Peter Collins, finally passing Hawthorn to take the final two laps as leader. In doing so Fangio broke the track record for the Nordeschlifer, or North Ring, by an amazing 12 seconds on three consecutive laps. He went into the record books that year with his fifth World Championship. Each model in this Limited Edition of just 50 is made from the highest quality prototyping resin and white-metal castings with many components individually machined. Amalgam's craftsmen spent more than twenty man weeks to make the drawings, produce the master model components and then cast the pieces. Each model then takes some fifty hours to construct. The spoked wheels are works of art in their own right. Normally, even on larger scale models, spoked wheels show minimal detailing, but on this model even the domes where the spokes join the wheel rims are shown in scale, and each wheel is properly laced with the full 72 spokes to replicate exactly the original wheels in all their complex and beautiful detail. Enormous attention has been given to the surface textures of the materials used and the unique handmade quality of the original car so that they, too, are sensitively rendered in the scale reproduction. Widely regarded as one of the greatest Grand Prix cars of all time, this model will appeal to all discerning collectors of motor racing history who seek to possess unique, hand built models of the highest possible quality. Since we started making models for F1 teams 10 years ago we have also yearned to make a collection of classic historic race cars. Until recently we have only managed to find time to develop two such models, the Ferrari 312T4 and the Maserati 250F. We loved building these models but we also learned that the development and detailing of such models made a huge demand on our pattern making team in terms of research and build time. We have finally taken a big step forward and we now have two teams dedicated to developing historic racers. Earlier this year we initiated a program that will see at least four new models released each year, starting with the Mercedes W196 Monoposto and Streamliner of 1954 and 1955. The start of the 2004 season for the BMW Williams F1 team saw the unveiling of a strange new front wing design that sprang from the newly adopted twin keel chassis. The car has not been as successful as was expected - perhaps more due to the volatile driver line up than the car design - but the FW26 is nevertheless a memorable landmark in the history of BMW and Williams. 1/8 Scale replica of the Williams FW26 Nose Cone. The design was produced to take advantage of Williams' newly adopted twin keel chassis but was dropped two thirds of the way of the way through the season. It was decided that the benefits did not outway the negatives that came from the increased weight of the nose, and the restrictions this gave with regard distribution of ballast. Nonetheless, it's a unique design that proved that the current crop are still able to think outside the box despite today's increasingly stringent regulations.
