1980. The new decade brought a record number of entries for the start of the season. Expectations were high that the champions of '79, Ferrari and Jody Scheckter, could be beaten. Enter Team Williams and Alan Jones - the new force in a bright new era for Formula One racing. But it took the entire season before the victory was in the bag. Jones took the opening race, but then faltered. It was up to Williams and Jones to pull out all the stops to seize the title. Includes "The Trouble With Girls", Jailhouse Rock, Spinout and Double Trouble. "The Trouble With Girls" As American as the 4th of July, apple pie - and Elvis! It's like a carnival midway and a week at some highfalutin, East Coast college all in one. The Chautauqua, a travelling 1927 tent show, has come to Radford Center, Iowa. And so has a heap of trouble. In a change-of-pace role, Elvis Presley portrays Walter Hale, the white-suited impresario overseeing the Chautauqua's novelty acts, lectures and close harmonies. The supporting cast is as colorful as the film's vibrant Americana. Vincent Price's Mr. Morality holds forth on immorality. John Carradine appears as a nimble-minded shakespearen actor. Marlyn Mason, Joyce Van Patten, Sheree North, Edward Andrews and Dabney Coleman also star. And Elvis sings as only he can, from the tender ballad Almost to the rousing traditional Swing Low Sweet Chariot and the untraditional rouser Clean Up Your Own Backyard. Jailhouse Rock From the Big House to the Big Time - Elvis Style. The King plays Vince Everett, jailed for manslaughter after a bar fight. There, Vince learns to belt out tunes instead of saloon patrons and after being paroled, follows a bumpy road to music and movie success. Six Presley songs by Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller spike the story, including Treat Me Nice, I Wanna Be Free and the shimmy-shakin' title tune that was Presley's favourite of all his films' production numbers. "It's the beast in me," Elvis says after kissing Peggy (Judy Tyler). Yeah, but it's the best of him too! Spinout Elvis Drives 'Em Wild! Three beautiful, marriage-minded women. One singing, race-car-revving bachelor with a single-minded pursuit: keeping his eyes on the road instead of the ladies. Buckle up, fella, dangerous curves ahead! Elvis Presley is at the wheel and headed for a romantic Spinout. Shelley Fabares (his co-star in Girl Happy) plays the lovestruck rich girl who always gets what she wants. Deborah Walley is the rock drummer eager for a love duet. Diane McBain is the bestselling author researching "the Perfect American Male" - and who knows she's found him. And playing Fabares' megabucks dad is Carl Betz, who also played her father on TV's The Donna Reed Show. Elvis sings Never Say Yes, Adam and Evil, All That I Am, the title number and the emphatic Stop, Look Listen. Take Spinout out for a spin. "Double Trouble" Elvis finds love, larceny and fun - on the double. When crooner Guy Lambert wraps his London show and travels to Brussels, two beauties secretly follow. One (Annette Day) is a lovestruck heiress, the other (Yvonne Romain) an enigmatic temptress. And they could be two too much for unattached Guy. Comedy, mystery and mayhem combine when Elvis Presley plays Guy in Double Trouble, a romp involving stolen gems, trenchcoated defectives - that is, detectives! - and more. Through it all, a guy's gotta do what a guy's gotta do. That means performing a tune array that includes the title cut, City by Night, Could I Fall In Love?, Long-Legged Girl and There's So Much World To See. Trouble was never this cool and this much fun. The Abbott and Costello TV Show is timeless American humor, as fresh today as it was 40 years ago. All the classic routines which "the boys" performed on film, radio and stage, were captured in 1952-1953 for the new medium of television and delivered at the peak of their powers. The regular cast of characters, including Mr. Fields, Mike the Cop, Stinky, Bacciagalupe and Hillary, had worked with Bud and Lou on film and stage and each contributed memorably. These shows stand today as perhaps the finest surviving representation of the art of burlesque comedy. Television Bacciagalupe installs a TV set in the boys' apartment so Lou can watch the "Hold That Cuckoo" quiz show. Hillary babysits Bingo the Chimp so Bud and Lou can go on the show. Incredibly, Lou answers the questions right, but the grand prize is a box of bubble gum! Back home, Lou spits out his gum, and drunken John Rednose promptly trips on it. He sues landlord Fields, and in the wildest courtroom scene ever, the boys burlesque the entire judicial system. Hillary's two girlfriends testify they're "positive, positive, positive" Rednose is guilty, and the judge closes the case with a gavel to Lou's head. The Haunted House Hillary asks Bud and Lou to spend the night in the haunted castle she's inherited from her Uncle Montague. Lawyer Melonhead says if she doesn't, she loses everything, and he gets it. In a non-stop parade of creepy comedy, Lou has run-ins with a gorilla, floating candles, ghosts and secret panels. Even strange echoes try to scare him away. While studying the map to the hidden treasure, the lovesick ape grabs Lou. But Melonhead's attempts to scare them away fail, and the gorilla even joins the boys' act. The Vacation The boys plan a restful vacation at the Biltmore Hotel near Phoenix. After painfully explaining to Lou what a "Hertz U-Drive" is, Bud takes Lou to Sporty Fields store to stock up for vacation. Lou creates havoc everywhere, even driving a motorboat through the store. At home, Bud's fears that the landlord will rent their apartment while they're gone has him pack and unpack repeatedly. After a long goodbye to Hillary, the boys pack up the obstinate car and consult the map. Lou drives 100 yards down the street to the Biltmore Hotel, next to the Phoenix Cafe! South Of Dixie Lou's lovesick again! This time it's an aspiring actress who moves into the boy's rooming house. Lou overhears her rehearsing a violent scene with an actor, and crashes into her apartment to save her. Impressed with his moving performance, she drafts Lou, Bud and Fields into the southern drama. The result bears little resemblance to the planned play, as it becomes filled with Abbott & Costello routines. With Lou as a zany Union soldier, the boys prove to be true uncivil warriors. These shows stand today as perhaps the finest surviving representation of the art of burlesque comedy. The Western Story Hillary's leaving to run the dude ranch she inherited from her uncle, and she invites Bud and Lou to work for her. They get lost enroute, but some smart aleck Indians get them to the B-Bar-Bop ranch. Once there, Lou tries unsuccessfully to milk a cow. The boys then join a posse headed by Sheriff Fields to stop cattle thieves. In the Red Dog Saloon, they confront Black Bart, and Lou leads a wild barroom brawl that miraculously corrals the entire gang. Barber Lou The boys must talk their way out of 5 speeding tickets while rushing Mrs. Bronson to the roominghouse to rehearse for her benefit show. As Lou practices "I Dream Of Jeannie", Bud directs the curtain to be raised and lowered. Lou thinks these are stage directions - with zany results. After the benefit, Lou gives Bud a rubdown while following the announcer on "Fatless Frankie's Reducing Radio Show". But when the station switches to instructions on painting a car, the rubdown takes a bizarre turn. Lou sandpapers Bud's rough exterior, before applying a two-toned paint job. Las Vegas Bud and Lou decide to take their "California Bankroll" ($2 wrapped around an orange) and parlay it into big bucks in Las Vegas. But first, they head to Friendly Fields' lot to buy a new car. After dickering for a real clunker, the boys, with Hillary in tow, drive to Las Vegas. Once there, a parade of zany touts try to tell Lou which horse to bet on. Bud explains the intricacies of "mudders" and "fodders," and Lou puts his bankroll on "Bazooka" who promptly loses. A pool game with a guy who thinks he's Julius Caesar send the boys home more broke than ever. Pest Exterminators The Abbott & Costello Exterminator Company's first job is to rid a nutty psychiatrist's office of termites. Lou confronts a patient with his own assortment of pests: bats and polka-dotted elephants. Next, Mrs. Featherton calls the doctor's office and Lou answers. 1978. Ferrari and Lauda had now gone their separate ways. Lauda moved to Brabham and Ferrari took on the young Gilles Villeneuve. Frank Williams and Patrick Head formed Williams Grand Prix Engineering and mounted their first tittle challenge with Alan Jones in the driving seat. Tyrrell had reverted back to four wheels from their radical six-wheeled P34, and this year it was Brabham who turned heads with the introduction of their BT-46B 'fan car'. On its first Grand Prix in Sweden it took first place only to be banned from future competition by the FIA. The Lotus Type 79 'wing car' was regarded as the best outfit, piloted by the experienced pairing of Mario Andretti and Ronnie Peterson. And with two rounds left to race, it was only Peterson that had any chance of catching Andretti. Formula One still hadn't made safety a paramount concern, and at Monza, an early crash left Peterson with fatal injuries, reaffirming the need for tighter controls. This tragedy gave Andretti the title and despite not finishing at Watkins Glen and coming 10th in Montreal, Lotus had secured enough points to take the constructors title by 28 points. 1979 saw Lotus secure Carlos Reutemann from Ferrari to partner Mario Andretti, leaving room for Jody Scheckter to join the Italian outfit. Wolf found a replacement for Scheckter in James Hunt, whose place was filled at McLaren by John Watson. The type 79 'wing car' had offered Lotus a great advantage in aerodynamic grip during the previous season. But for this year, many of the teams had incorporated the technology into their designs. As the season progressed Williams' reliability improved and Alan Jones demonstrated the team's pace, winning four out of the last six races. For Williams and Jones it was too little too late. The consistent performances from the 312T4 model of the Ferrari team paid off, and despite only having three victories throughout the season, Scheckter took the tittle. 1979 also saw Formula One say its goodbyes to two of the decade's greatest characters: James Hunt and Niki Lauda. Hunt quit racing after the Monaco Grand Prix claiming to be fed up with the Formula One, and Lauda retired at the penultimate Grand Prix in Montreal.
