Introduction

As the name suggests, American style fridge freezers have long been popular in America, and now they’re becoming more popular in the UK as well. The biggest advantage to these large fridge freezers is that they offer a lot of food storage capacity, and they offer great optional features like chilled drinks, ice cube dispensers, or home bars. Some of these large American style fridge freezers provide more than 20 cubic feet of capacity, twice the capacity offered by a standard fridge freezer. The larger doors also give you useful storage, letting you store a gallon of milk in the door.

You can find the latest designs to suit your kitchen décor, such as a black American fridge freezer, cream American fridge freezer, white American fridge freezer, or stainless steel American fridge freezer. Popular choices include an American style fridge freezer with ice maker or an American style fridge freezer with water.

American style fridge freezers, or American fridge freezers, are very large, upright fridge freezers. They feature two doors that run the length from top to bottom of the appliance, locating the fridge and freezer compartments side by side. These large appliances can provide double the storage capacity of a conventional fridge freezer. They’re frost free, and many offer different cooling zones for versatility. The only downside is that they can be difficult to fit in a UK kitchen, as they can be 1800mm wide, up to three times wider than a conventional fridge freezer. If space is not a concern, however, an American style fridge freezer is a great addition to your home, letting you store a week’s worth of food for even a large family.

The fridge freezer is one of your most important appliances, and choosing the right one isn’t always easy. After all, it’s not something you buy every week or even every year, so the terms and features may not be that familiar to you. Price Inspector is here to help you find a cheap American fridge freezer. Our buying guide will help sort out the available features and give you buying tips, and we’ve also shopped the UK stores to find you the best prices.

Things to consider before you buy

  • Make very sure that you actually have room for an American style fridge freezer. You also have to make sure the delivery company will be able to get the appliance into your kitchen.
  • Consider where it will be located. It needs to be located away from the cooler and boiler, out of direct sunlight.
  • American style fridge freezers come in a variety of heights and widths, helping you find a model that will fit your available space.
  • An American style fridge freezer is a large appliance, and it will be a focal point of your kitchen. Make sure you choose a colour and design that will fit the rest of your kitchen appliances and décor.
  • Another important consideration when buying an American style fridge freezer is its energy efficiency. While they are more expensive initially, a more efficient fridge freezer will save you money on your energy bills and protect the environment at the same time. American style fridge freezers all come with an energy grade rating, with A or A+ being the most efficient.
  • Fridge freezers are graded the ambient temperature they are designed to operate safely in. Most UK units are SN (sub-normal) or N (normal), with most homes requiring an N model. SN fridges are appropriate for unheated areas like a cellar or garage.
  • Allow several centimeters on either side of the fridge freezer as well as at the top and back. This allows the air to circulate.
  • Review the different features to determine their worth to you. There’s no point of paying extra for a model that includes a feature that you won’t really use.
  • Try to inspect the model at a local retailer, even if you will be buying online. This will give you a good idea of the appliance’s quality, especially checking the quality of the seals.
  • Review the guarantee to understand what is covered and for how long. A standard warranty provides repair or replacement for 6 to 12 months.

Available Features

  • Ice and water dispensers are typically included for American style fridge freezers. The most common method is to directly plumb the system. However, if you cannot locate the fridge freezer near a plumbing line, there are models that use stored water. These will have a reservoir that you can manually fill. Plumbed models are a better alternative as they provide fresh water, but you have to locate them within 1m of a standard dishwasher connector.
  • Frost Free: This will keep your food fresher for a longer period, and it prevents ice build-up. It will save you from having to defrost the food, and the air circulation limits odours.
  •  Fast Freeze: This function lets you quickly freeze fresh food, which helps it to retain its texture and nutrients. It also keeps from the freezer from warming up when you add a large quantity of fresh food.
    * Anti-bacterial: An anti-bacterial material is applied to the walls of the fridge, helping prevent the growth of bacteria. This reduces odours and helps your food last longer.
  • Dual temperature controls: By controlling the temperatures of the fridge and freezer compartments separately, the air for the two compartments won’t mix. This lets the fridge section maintain the proper humidity level, odours won’t mix between the compartments, and temperatures can be set most efficiently for both compartments.
  • A Home Bar will give you easy access to your favourite drinks. Using a small inset that functions as a “mini fridge,” you can open a small door for drinks. This saves energy because you are not opening the full door. The door hinges to form a shelf that you can use while you pour a drink.
  •  Can Holders offer a space saving design that is useful if you store a lot of cans.
  • A Chill Compartment, sometimes called a meat drawer, provides a colder storage location for meats and fish.
  • High Temperature Alerts will let you know if your fridge or freezer gets too warm, either because of a power failure or because the thermostat isn’t set correctly.
  • A Holiday Button lets you turn off the fridge and set the freezer to the lower temperature when you are on holiday. This lets you save energy rather than cooling an empty fridge.
  • Adjustable Shelves allow you to change the spacing between shelves depending on your storage needs. Different models use wall groves, brackets, or cranks. The crank method is especially convenient if you have a full shelf that needs to be raised or lowered.

Jargon Explained

Cubic feetA volume measurement equal to approximately 28.3 cubic litres. It refers to a three-dimensional cube measuring 1 foot (0.3 metres) high, 1 foot deep, and 1 foot wide. For a fridge freezer, cubic feet will indicate the amount of food storage capacity. Two different fridge freezers with the same outside dimensions might have different storage capacities.
