It is a common belief among consumers that plasma TVs don’t last as long and that you have to worry about screen problems like static images burning into the screen. However, the newest plasma TVs have an anti-burn protective layer, so they are no longer susceptible to burn-ins. Also, the lifetime of plasma TV averages between 30,000 and 60,000 hours, which means you could watch TV 8 eights a day for 10 years. This is better than the longevity experienced with standard televisions.

Some people also have fears of the gas leaking on a plasma TV. However, this rarely happens, and even more rarely is it a serious problem. It is true, however, that plasma TVs can experience problems in high altitudes, such as overheating or buzzing. However, if you live in a high altitude, there are plasma TVs available that are designed to handle these problems.

One thing to keep in mind is that most plasma TVs have HDTV features, but you should be aware of the difference between HDTV Ready and true HDTV plasma TVs.   • Panasonic TVs offer the best colour saturation, and they have worked to reduce the power consumption. While they produce outstanding blacks, their primary colours are less accurate. At the high end, Panasonic delivers the best overall picture quality.
  • Samsung: Samsung plasma TVs are comparatively expensive, and they do not have S-Video inputs. While they provide great picture quality, especially for deep blacks, they are not the best in the market. However, they are a strong competitor, providing accurate colours and Yahoo widget.
  • Hitachi: Hitachi plasma TVs offer good anti-glare screens and are generally less expensive. However, they do not produce deep blacks, making for a soft picture, and they do not produce accurate primary colours. If your budget is tight, this might be a good TV for you, but if you can afford to spend more, you can find a better TV from another manufacturer.

If you are buying a new TV, get a HD-ready model, especially if it will be your primary TV. You’ll receive Freeview and enjoy better images. When you are choosing the best plasma TV for you, the most important factors are your budget, your viewing distance, and the look you want.

  • Budget: Generally, television prices depend on their screen size and resolution. The price may also be affected by integrated tuners or multiple HDMI inputs, but these will save space and reduce the number of cables you need. Some may off additional features, such as picture-in-picture, surround sound, and more.
  • Viewing distance: While you won’t lose image quality from sitting too near a plasma TV, it will affect your viewing experience. If you sit too close to a large screen, you won’t experience the big picture. If you’re too far away from a small screen, you lose the feeling of being close to the action.

Jargon Explained

Aspect RatioThe ratio between the width and height of the screen. All plasma televisions have a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. This lets you view many DVDs in their original format.
Contrast ratioThis is the difference between the darkest and the brightest parts of a picture. In general, a higher contrast ratio gives you a more realistic image.
Pixels A television displays pictures by using a collection of tiny dots. Each of these dots is a pixel. Larger screen televisions require more pixels to keep the picture from looking distorted or grainy. Common resolutions are 720p and 1080p. Most programming is provided in 720p format, and you can still view 1080p programming; the quality is just downgraded to 720p.
PlasmaPlasma TVs work by trapping tiny cells between two flat panes of gas. The gas in these cells is electrically converted to plasma that emits UV light, which then emits visible light. They are heavier than LCD TVs, but still light enough to mount on the wall.
Viewing AngleThe technology of plasma TVs lets you view from an angle of 160 degrees in any direction, including vertically. This is much better than standard TVs, letting you watch realistic images from more areas of the room.
